We’re dishing up latest trends for the grab-and-go sector in 2023

Our takeaway and delivered food packaging experts are this month giving their trend predictions for the grab-and-go sector for the coming year (February 2023).

They’ve spilled the beans on what they think are the go-to food and flavour fashions for 2023.

Ocean-based foods

Lee Richards, our Sales Director, says: “Searches for ocean-based foods and minerals have recently soared on Pinterest and the platform believes they’re set to be a big market for 2023 and we agree.

“This is a fairly modern food trend in the West. However, the health benefits of green algae, nori and salmon have long been touted in Asian markets. We’re also hearing about a continued growth in vegan food options too.

Climatarianism

“Other on-trend ideas that are being discussed widely relate to people who identify as locavores and advocate a climatarianism approach to their food consumption. This is a diet that focuses on reducing your carbon footprint and keeping track of your impact on the environment.

“Consumers are now extremely concerned about climate change and are buying food items, where possible, that have been produced locally. Thus, minimising their carbon footprint.

More ethos on packaging

“This is a great opportunity and also a challenge for the grab-and-go sector. However, it highlights, more than ever, the importance for clearly labelled packaging that emphases, where applicable, British ingredients, brand ethos, allergies and sustainability too.

“The majority of our hot drinks’ solutions – from cups to drinks carriers such as PortaTray – can be printed, so from brand awareness to sustainability goals, grab-and-go outlets should not overlook the opportunity to use bespoke printed packaging to engage with their customers and share sustainability stories.

Coffee-less coffee

“Hand-in-hand with climate change is another key grab-and-go trend anticipated for 2023 – coffee-less coffee. We’ve already seen milk-less milk, fish-less fish and meat-less meat driven by growing vegan requests in this marketplace.

“Now coffee-less coffee is predicted to be huge too. This is driven less by consumer pull through and more by scientists, who say coffee plants are struggling due to the impact of the world’s now extreme weather patterns.”

Push boundaries

We challenge manufacturers to push boundaries to develop new products and explore what’s possible in food-to-go.

Lee adds: “The right sustainable packaging is key to enhancing food presentation and boosting sales. We look at the latest products, packaging and trends in the ever-competitive hot and cold, grab-and-go arena and ask how best to serve up what the consumer wants and needs, alongside maximum efficiency.

Sustainable packaging

“Choosing sustainable food packaging starts with ensuring the raw material is responsibly sourced and that it can be recycled or composted after it has been used. We offer one of the widest ranges of innovative foodservice packaging products, including some new recyclable and home compostable products.

Planet conscious

“We’ve just launched a range of kraft food boxes lined with Notpla Coating, an innovative special lining made from seaweed, which replaces the plastic coating usually used on foodservice products.

Notpla won an Earthshot award from Prince William in December and has been widely featured on national radio and TV, and in the print press too. Many consumers of all ages relate to this brand, as everyone becomes more planet conscious.

Fully recyclable & home compostable

“Notpla Coating does not require specific recycling pathways or specialised industrial composting equipment to degrade, taking less than six weeks to completely decompose in a home composting environment. Our fully recyclable, Notpla coated kraft food boxes are grease and heat-resistant, stackable and easy to use.”
