Tri-Star’s “innovative” Artisan packs wow Sammies judges

 

FPA National Distributor of the Year, Tri-Star Packaging has triumphed at yet another top awards ceremony – this time scooping the prize for Sandwich Product of the Year at the prestigious British Sandwich Association Awards (nicknamed the Sammies).

Tri-Star won the award for what judges described as its “particularly innovative” Artisan range of packaging for rustic-style sandwiches. Managing director Kevin Curran collected the gong on behalf of the Tri-Star team at a glittering ceremony in London’s Lancaster Hotel on 17 May. The company joined a true ‘A’ list of winners on the evening, with Sammies also given to the likes of Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, Greggs, Marks & Spencer and Costa.

The Artisan range was created in conjunction with leading packaging manufacturer Anson specifically for the hand-made, square-cut bloomer-style of sandwich that is currently all the rage in delis and discerning retailers up and down the country.

The range comprises two innovative pack designs – the ‘Bloomer U’ and the ‘Bloomer 2’. The Artisan Bloomer U is a flat structure with sides that click upwards to form a U-shape. This design helps guarantee that the sandwich stays in great shape and that it is easy to pick up and put down, making it ideal for eating at the office desk or grazing in the park. The Artisan Bloomer 2, meanwhile, is an off-the shelf pack boasting two cavities that are the perfect shape and size for square-cut sandwiches.

Explaining their decision to name the Artisan range the 2012 Sandwich Product of the Year, the Sammies judges said: “The packaging developed by Tri-Star for the Artisan range was particularly innovative because it was specifically designed to hold bloomer-shaped bread which was a real challenge.”

This latest success follows hot on the heels of Tri-Star’s Gold Award in the Innovation Challenge at last October’s Lunch! exhibition – for PortaTray – and comes just two months after Tri-Star won a brace of accolades at this year’s Foodservice Packaging Association Awards.
